On 9th February 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 (5.4 according to Indonesian authorities) struck near Jayapura City, in the Indonesian Province of Papua. The earthquake was recorded at 6.28 UTC (15.28 local time) with its epicentre close to the northern border with Papua New Guinea.
Before the main earthquake, two foreshocks of 5.0 M and 4.5 M respectively were detected in the same area. The Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) reported four fatalities and 2,136 individuals were evacuated to 15 shelters across Jayapura City. In addition, at least 56 buildings were damaged, including one hospital.
