In the past few days, heavy rainfalls have caused devastating floods in Jiangxi Province, China. According to the latest report, the disaster has affected over 497,000 people in 43 counties of 7 cities. Among them, 14,000 individuals have been forced to evacuate to emergency shelters, while 2,482 people urgently require living assistance.
The floods have also caused severe damage to agricultural land. Around 67,700 hectares of crops have been affected, while 11,000 hectares of crops have been entirely destroyed. This has resulted in a direct economic loss of 520 million CNY.
The situation worsened when a dam broke due to the flooding. Although it was later closed, the damage had already been done. Furthermore, waterlogging in the urban areas has also been reported.
To manage the crisis, the National Headquarters for Flood Prevention and Drought Control has launched a Level IV emergency response - the lowest of the 4-tier system - for the floods in Jiangxi Province. An expert team has been dispatched to the affected regions to oversee rescue operations. Over 1000 people, 19 vehicles, and 18 boats have been deployed to help rescue and evacuate those in need.
This is a developing story, and more information is expected to emerge in the coming days. The situation in Jiangxi Province remains precarious, and the authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution and follow instructions from emergency services personnel.
