In a distressing development, an alliance of ethnic armed organizations initiated synchronized assaults on various military outposts in northern Shan State, Myanmar, at 04:00 on October 27. The conflict has given rise to intense fighting in several areas, including Kyaukme, Laukkai, Lashio, Kunlong districts, and in proximity to the towns of Muse and Chinshwehaw.
The situation has prompted a significant displacement crisis, with an estimated 4,100 to 10,000 individuals forced to leave their homes. Tragically, there have been reports of civilian casualties and the use of heavy shelling in the ongoing clashes.
In response to the escalating violence, the military authorities have taken stringent measures, closing the local Lashio airport and blocking all access roads to the town. This includes the vital border road leading to China and, according to certain reports, the road connecting to Mandalay.
As the situation unfolds, partners of the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) stationed in Lashio have reported the safety of their teams. However, due to the persisting and severe fighting, it remains too early to initiate a comprehensive response to address the urgent humanitarian needs resulting from this volatile situation.
