In a harrowing turn of events, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Nepal at 18:02 UTC, with its epicenter located in Jajarkot, Karnali province. The quake, which occurred at a depth of 17.9 km, has sent shockwaves across the region, affecting parts of North India as well.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has reported a devastating toll, with 140 people confirmed dead and 140 others suffering injuries in the wake of this natural disaster. Disturbingly, approximately 40 percent of houses in the impacted regions have sustained damage, leaving many residents without shelter.

Communication networks in remote areas have been severely disrupted, adding to the challenges faced by authorities and relief efforts. Landslides have also blocked highways in certain locations, but the government has assured that these crucial routes will be reopened today to facilitate the flow of aid.

Swiftly responding to the crisis, security personnel have been mobilized for search and rescue operations, while medical teams are on the ground to provide essential treatment to the injured victims. The Prime Minister and other government officials wasted no time, visiting the affected areas in the early morning hours and directing all available resources towards the response and relief efforts.

In the face of this catastrophe, humanitarian organizations are preparing to dispatch their stockpiles to the affected areas. The most pressing needs in these regions include shelter, support for winterization, access to clean water and sanitation facilities, and food for the affected communities.

Fortunately, no damage has been reported in neighboring India. As the situation continues to unfold, the people of Nepal remain resilient, and the international community stands ready to support them during this challenging time.
