sk    South Korea

South Korea, an East Asian nation on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, shares one of the world’s most heavily militarized borders with North Korea. It’s equally known for its green, hilly countryside dotted with cherry trees and centuries-old Buddhist temples, plus its coastal fishing villages, sub-tropical islands and high-tech cities such as Seoul, the capital. ― Google

At least 2 people have died and 10 are missing after the powerful Typhoon Hinnamnor hit regions of South Korea on 06 September 2022. The storm dumped over 1 metre of rain in some areas.

South Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety reported cumulative rainfall of 1,059.0 mm in Jeju (04 to 06 September 2022), while Gyeongju recorded 447.5 mm, Pohang 367.5 mm and Ulsan City 343.5 mm.

The rain has triggered flash flooding and landslides in particular in North Gyeongsang Province. Officials reported one person died in floods in the coastal city of Pohang which has recorded 271 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. A second fatality occurred after a landslide buried a house in Gyeongju.

Meanwhile at least 10 people remain unaccounted for, including 8 people in flooded underground parking garage of an apartment building in Pohang. Rescuers were draining the garage in order to search for the missing. One person was reported missing in floods in a separate incident in Pohang, and another went missing after floods in Ulsan.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety reported 160 buildings were damaged in the storm, along with around 50 roads and bridges and 1,320 hectares of crops. Over 60,000 homes were left without electricity. Around 3,000 people have evacuated homes and moved to safer areas.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Typhoon Hinnamnor is expected to track north over the Sea of Japan between North Korea and Japan. Heavy rain was already reported in parts of North Korea, including 120.4 mm of rain in 24 hours to 06 September in Changjon.

The storm previously caused minor flooding in parts of Japan and wind damage to homes in Toyama, Ishikawa and Okinawa Prefectures, where evacuation orders were issued.
