A yellow alert has been triggered on 17 August by Minister of Interior, following abnormal seismic activity on the western flank in Karthala Volcano.
The Karthala volcano is very active, having erupted more than 20 times since the 19th century. Its most recent eruptions occurred in April 2005 and May 2006, with 2005 eruptions causing the evacuation of more than 30,000 residents.
The Volcanic Observatory of Karthala has been observing seismic activity since 15 July.
DG ECHO is replenishing the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) to prevent the already known consequences of Karthala volcanic eruptions by contributing to good population communication, contingency planning and water protection in 4 Sub-divisions the Grand Comoros island (Moroni).
