On 4 October, civil society organizations in the Soum Province issued a communiqué warning of the death of eight children, supposedly due to famine, in Djibo (Soum province, Sahel region). On the same day, SERACOM, a food security actor in Djibo, alerted of households having spent more than three days without meals and a state of famine which could turn into a humanitarian catastrophe.
According to World Food Programme (WFP), 300,000 individuals are indeed in a pre-famine stage in Djibo which is under blockade since February 2022.
On 26 September, a commercial convoy carrying food and other vital items was attacked by a non-state armed group, causing the death of 10 civilians, 27 security forces and many injured. The market in Djibo is largely empty; DG ECHO and partners are exploring possible means to bring food to the population despite the blockade.
Humanitarian access is hampered by several impediments in Burkina Faso: explosive devices, irregular controls, or formal and informal administrative barriers. In Burkina Faso 4,9 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.
