Incessant rainfall across the country for three days have caused several rivers to flow above danger level flooding many communities, particularly in the western parts of the country. There have been 10 fatalities and nearly 3,600 households have been displaced by the floods and landslides. Several highways are blocked by landslides, stranding hundreds of passengers travelling during the country’s largest festival.
Security forces have been mobilised to evacuate the families that are affected by flooding. Municipal governments in coordination with the Red Cross and local organisations are responding to the situation.
The Department of Hydrology and Metrology has predicted more rain for the next two days in the western part of the country and have warned communities living near the major rivers to evacuate to higher grounds.
