Very heavy rainfall has been affecting the western Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in particular the capital Kinshasa, since 12 December, triggering landslides and causing flash floods, mudflows and rivers overflow (particularly the Ndjili, Nsanga, Mokali, and Nsuenge Rivers) that have resulted in casualties and widespread damage. Media report, as of 14 December, at least 120 fatalities, a number of injured people and several collapsed houses across the Kinshasa greater area. In addition, media also report major roads completely blocked and several closed schools. The highway connecting Kinshasa with the sea port city of Matadi were also closed.
