In the last month, six children have died from preventable diseases. This increase in child mortality is linked to lack of food, disease outbreaks, acute malnutrition due to the advance of illegal mining (river waters contamination plus the impossibility of accessing their traditional territories for fishing, hunting) and the closure of health posts.
The Hutukara Yanomami Association had denounced this situation in the second semester of 2022, condemning the death of nine children between June and September 2022.
Yanomami from the regions of Xitei and Surucucus, in Roraima (Amazon State in the North of Brazil) are among the most affected indigenous communities. Increased violence, threats to human rights and environmental defenders as well as indigenous leaders are common across the entire territory.
