Indonesia is experiencing severe flooding and landslides in areas of Sumatra island due to heavy rainfall that began on January 21, 2023. As of January 24, the disaster has affected almost 100,000 people and 15,000 homes, with 3 fatalities reported.
The Aceh Province in the far north of Sumatra Island has been severely impacted, with flooding reported in several regencies including Pidie Jaya, Aceh Tamiang, East Aceh, Bireuen, Pidie, and North Aceh. Flooding and landslides have also occurred in Deli Serdang in North Sumatra Province and Padang Pariaman Regency in West Sumatra Province, resulting in 2 deaths and 5 injuries.
