The current cholera situation in the district is considered high risk with a population of 53,080 at risk. The district faces multiple risk factors, including a combination of geographical and socio-economic factors, ongoing rainy season, outbreaks in neighboring countries, and poor WASH facilities and infrastructure in a predominantly rural community. The district shares borders with Mozambique and Malawi, with Lusaka, the most endemic province, currently experiencing floods. Acting quickly in the early stages of the outbreak, as demonstrated in the Lusaka response (MDRZM016), has proven to be effective in controlling the spread of cholera. There have been 21 recorded cases between January 21st and January 30th, with 10 confirmed cases.
