On 17 February, a landslide occurred in Iligan City, Philippines, due to continuous downpours of heavy rain. This was attributed to a Low-Pressure Area (LPA) weather system that entered the country on 13 February, causing flash floods and landslides in several areas. As a result of this landslide, at least 40 families comprising 200 individuals were pre-emptively evacuated to safer areas.

The Iligan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) immediately responded to the situation by preparing food packs for the affected population and conducting rapid damage and needs assessment. The DRRMO's quick response to the landslide and the subsequent evacuation helped ensure the safety of the affected families and minimize potential harm.

To support the affected population, ECHO partner Plan International distributed hygiene kits through the ECHO-funded Move Up Action. These kits contained essential items such as soap, toothpaste, and sanitary pads to help the affected individuals maintain their personal hygiene.

The City Government of Iligan, in partnership with humanitarian agencies, continues to monitor the landslide risk-prone areas and activate pre-positioned clusters if the situation requires further emergency response. This proactive approach ensures that the city is better prepared to handle any emergencies that may arise in the future.

In conclusion, the landslide in Iligan City serves as a reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and risk reduction. The prompt response of the Iligan City DRRMO, in collaboration with humanitarian agencies, helped minimize the potential harm caused by the landslide. The continued monitoring of the landslide risk-prone areas and the activation of pre-positioned clusters demonstrates the city's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
