Over 60 people are feared missing after a massive landslide hit the community of Alausí in Chimborazo Province, Ecuador, late on 26 March 2023. According to government officials, at least 7 people have lost their lives in the disaster, while more than 30 have been rescued and 23 are receiving medical treatment.
Rescue efforts are currently underway, with a team of over 300 people from the Armed Forces, National Police, Fire Departments, and the Red Cross scouring the area for survivors. As of 27 March, 64 people were still reported missing.
The landslide has caused significant damage to the area, with around 163 homes and a school destroyed or damaged, directly impacting the lives of approximately 500 people. In addition, the water and power infrastructure have been affected, and a 150-meter stretch of road was severely damaged.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have ordered the evacuation of around 600 homes in the area considered to be at risk. Ecuador President Guillermo Lasso visited the affected community on 27 March and announced a plan to build 600 houses for those impacted by the natural disaster, stating that "we cannot risk the life of any Ecuadorian."
