Khartoum, April 17, 2023: Clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces erupted in the capital city of Khartoum on the morning of April 15, 2023. The conflict has now entered its third day, with reports of gunfire and explosions in several strategic locations in Khartoum, as well as in other state capitals across the country, including El Fasher, El Obeid, Nyala, and Kassala.
The fighting has taken a heavy toll on the region's infrastructure, with the Khartoum international airport being significantly damaged, including damage to civilian planes. Even a UNHAS (United Nations Humanitarian Air Service) plane was destroyed during the crossfire, which will severely impact humanitarian operations in the area.
According to the Sudan Doctors' Union, as of the morning of April 17, at least 97 civilians have been killed and 365 injured in the ongoing clashes, although the actual numbers could be higher as many may not have been able to reach hospitals in time for treatment. Tragically, four humanitarian workers were also killed and two injured while carrying out their duties in North Darfur.
As a result of the escalating violence, most humanitarian partners have temporarily suspended their operations, further complicating efforts to provide much-needed aid to affected communities. The situation remains volatile and fluid, with the conflict spreading across the country and posing a grave threat to the safety and well-being of civilians, including vulnerable populations who rely on humanitarian assistance.
The clashes in Khartoum and other parts of Sudan have raised concerns among the international community, which has called for an immediate end to the violence and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The situation is being closely monitored, and efforts are underway to address the escalating crisis and prevent further loss of life and damage to infrastructure. The safety and protection of civilians and humanitarian workers remain a top priority, and all parties are urged to prioritize the well-being of the people of Sudan and work towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
