The passage of the tropical cyclone MOCHA has left behind a trail of destruction in Myanmar and Bangladesh. The cyclone hit the western and northern parts of Myanmar and the south-eastern region of Bangladesh on 14-15 May, causing widespread damage.
According to reports from DG ECHO and UN OCHA, across all affected states in Myanmar, there have been 41 fatalities and around 700 people have been injured. Over 100,000 people have been evacuated and an estimated 5.4 million have been affected. The western Rakhine region, which includes several Rohingya Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps, has been hit particularly hard, with significant damage to infrastructure and properties. In Chin, over 1,200 houses were partially or fully destroyed, while severe flooding has affected more than 100,000 people in villages in Magway and Sagaing.
Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, the UN has reported that nearly 430,000 people have been affected, with over 2,000 houses destroyed and more than 10,600 damaged across the Chattogram Division. The Rohingya refugee camps in the Cox's Bazar area have also been severely affected.
The Copernicus EMS was activated in rapid mapping mode (EMSR661) on 12 May for Myanmar, and four satellite maps have been produced so far. Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over both countries, which is likely to exacerbate the situation.
As rescue and relief efforts continue in the affected regions, authorities in Myanmar and Bangladesh have urged people to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols.
