Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo - After months of restricted access due to escalating insecurity, an interagency mission led by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) embarked on a crucial journey from Goma to Rutshuru. The mission, comprised of seven UN agencies and five international and national non-governmental organizations (NGOs), aims to conduct a comprehensive multi-sector needs assessment in various villages within the Rutshuru and Rwanguba health zones.
These health zones have witnessed a significant influx of over 90,000 displaced individuals returning since October 2022. The primary objective of the mission is to evaluate the pressing needs of the local population and identify the most critical areas requiring immediate humanitarian intervention.
Additionally, the interagency team plans to deliver emergency response aid, focusing on medical and nutritional supplies. This timely assistance is expected to alleviate the suffering of the vulnerable communities affected by the ongoing crisis.
The decision to initiate this assessment comes on the heels of an access mission conducted earlier by the Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator and the Deputy Head of Office for OCHA in the Democratic Republic of Congo. During their visit, they engaged in constructive discussions with military and local actors, deliberating on the vital issue of humanitarian access and exploring ways to reinforce humanitarian operations in the region.
The ongoing multi-sector needs assessment mission is projected to conclude on May 16, providing a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by the communities in Rutshuru and Rwanguba health zones. The findings and recommendations from this assessment will play a crucial role in shaping future humanitarian initiatives, ensuring effective and targeted aid delivery to those in need.
As the interagency mission sets out to navigate the complex and volatile situation, the international community awaits the outcomes of this assessment with anticipation, hoping for actionable solutions that can bring relief to the conflict-affected population.
Stay tuned for further updates as we closely monitor the progress of the mission and the subsequent actions undertaken to address the humanitarian needs in the region.
