Between May 15 and 21, non-state armed groups launched a series of attacks in Burkina Faso, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 70 lives. These attacks targeted the Koulpélogo province along the Togo-Ghana border and the Kompienga province along the Benin-Togo border.

In the province of Koulpélogo alone, the attacks have led to the displacement of at least 7,000 individuals, adding to the already alarming number of internally displaced persons in Burkina Faso. As of March 31, 2023, the National Council for Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation (CONASUR) had registered 2,062,534 internally displaced persons.

The humanitarian situation in Burkina Faso remains dire, with the 2023 Humanitarian Response Plan highlighting that one in five Burkinabè, approximately 4.7 million people, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. This assistance includes access to food, shelter, healthcare, and protection.

Of grave concern is the imminent food security crisis. It is projected that 42,000 people will find themselves in a catastrophic food security situation, nearing famine, during the upcoming lean season. Additionally, another 650,000 individuals who are currently in a pre-famine stage could fall into famine if they do not receive assistance within the next six months.

The World Food Programme (WFP) in Burkina Faso has revealed a significant funding gap of USD 102 million. This funding is crucial to sustain the WFP's emergency response efforts from May to October 2023. Without adequate financial support, the WFP's ability to provide essential assistance, including food aid, to the affected populations will be severely compromised.

International actors and humanitarian organizations are actively working to respond to the escalating crisis in Burkina Faso. However, the challenges faced are immense, necessitating increased support and resources to alleviate the suffering experienced by the affected people.

The government of Burkina Faso, in collaboration with its partners, is making concerted efforts to address the security situation and provide assistance to those in need. Nevertheless, the persistent attacks by non-state armed groups pose significant obstacles, hindering the delivery of vital aid to vulnerable communities.

Immediate action is needed from the international community to prioritize the urgent needs of the people in Burkina Faso. Protecting innocent lives, ensuring the safety of displaced individuals, and providing critical humanitarian assistance must be the focus.

As the situation continues to deteriorate, efforts must be made to address the root causes of the conflict and promote lasting peace and stability in Burkina Faso. Only then can its citizens rebuild their lives and communities in a safe and secure environment. The plight of the people in Burkina Faso demands the collective commitment of the global community to alleviate their suffering and restore hope for a better future.
