Tropical cyclone DOKSURI, known as "Egay" in the Philippines, has rapidly intensified into a super typhoon and is on a trajectory moving northwest towards the Luzon Strait. The typhoon is expected to make landfall on 25-26 July, bringing extreme weather conditions and posing a severe threat to the affected regions.
As of 0.00 UTC on July 25, the center of Super Typhoon DOKSURI was located over the eastern Philippine Sea, approximately 270 kilometers southeast of Santa Ana Municipality in Cagayan Province, northern Philippines. The storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 241 km/h, making it a powerful and dangerous weather event.
The projected path of the super typhoon indicates that it will move north-northwest over the South China Sea, passing south of Taiwan. There are concerns that it could make landfall on 28 July over the coast of Guangdong Province, adding to the potential impact on the affected areas.
The combination of Tropical Cyclone DOKSURI and the Southwest Monsoon has resulted in heavy rainfall across the region. According to national authorities, one person has been reported injured, and approximately 100 people have been displaced, with nearly 17,000 people affected across five regions in the Philippines. The total number of potentially affected individuals stands at a staggering 3.9 million.
Over the next 72 hours, the forecast predicts very heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges in parts of northern Philippines, particularly Batanes and Babuyan Islands, as well as most of Taiwan. Authorities are urging residents in these regions to take all necessary precautions and follow evacuation orders to ensure their safety.
In response to the impending disaster, DG ECHO partners have taken proactive measures by initiating anticipatory actions in areas that are deemed most at risk in the Philippines. These actions aim to mitigate the potential impact of the super typhoon and provide aid and support to communities in its path.
As the situation continues to evolve, authorities are closely monitoring the path and intensity of Super Typhoon DOKSURI, and further updates will be provided to the public to ensure preparedness and response measures are in place.
