On 24th July, the Public Health Emergency Operation Centre (PHOEC) informed the Minister of Health (MoH) about a confirmed cholera outbreak in Namayingo District, Uganda, which is located near the Kenyan border.
As of 7th July, there have been a total of 38 suspected cases, out of which 5 have been confirmed cases, and sadly, 7 fatalities have been reported. Among the deaths, two have been confirmed as cholera cases. The outbreak has spread to two districts, namely Kayunga and Namayingo.
In Kayunga District, a positive case with the Vibrio Cholerae Ogawa 01 strain was confirmed on 19th July, prompting immediate action. A team from the Ministry of Health Public Health Fellowship Program was dispatched on 20th July to investigate the situation and contain the spread.
Similarly, in response to the outbreak in Namayingo District, a District Rapid Response team is being deployed to Bumalenge Parish to assess the situation, provide medical aid, and implement necessary measures to curb further transmission of the disease.
The authorities and health officials are closely monitoring the situation and undertaking all necessary efforts to control the outbreak and prevent it from spreading further to other regions.
