In the last few days, India has been grappling with the impact of heavy monsoon rainfall, leading to a surge in casualties and evacuations. As of 26-27 July, the National Emergency Response Centre (NDMI) has reported a total of 52 fatalities across multiple states. Himachal Pradesh and Maharastra each witnessed 11 deaths, while Kerala, Haryana, Gujarat, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, and Madhya Pradesh reported five fatalities each. Chhattisgarh, Assam, and Punjab recorded one death each. Furthermore, over 6,000 people have been evacuated, and approximately 58,000 individuals are affected by the ongoing deluge.
The destruction caused by the monsoon is evident, with 1,520 houses reported as damaged across 16 states. Since April, the NDMI has recorded a staggering toll of 1,612 fatalities, 39 missing persons, 770 injured individuals, and more than 61,800 damaged houses nationwide.
The situation remains critical as the meteorological department forecasts heavy rainfall to persist in central and western India over the next 24 hours. Central India, especially Madhya Pradesh, is expected to experience very heavy rain, posing further challenges for the authorities and rescue operations.
As the monsoon continues to wreak havoc, emergency response teams are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact on communities. The authorities are urging residents in affected areas to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant during this challenging period of incessant rainfall.
