Floods caused by monsoon rains have been affecting Assam State and the hills of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya in recent days, causing causalities, displacement, and damages.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 190,000 people are affected by floods across 17 districts in Assam. Over 400 people are taking shelter in two relief camps. One person died after drowning in flood waters. The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries were flowing over danger levels in several areas of upper Assam.
The local administration and SDRF are carrying out rescue operations. 45 relief distribution centres have been activated in the affected areas.
The flood situation is likely to worsen as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued heavy rains in places across Assam, hilly areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya over the next 24 hours.
