On 12 November, Kichanga villages in Beni territory, North-Kivu, DRC witnessed a surge in armed violence, compelling more than 1,000 individuals to seek refuge in Uganda. The displaced persons reported attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) against the civilian population, resulting in the tragic loss of 19 lives. As of 14 November, the UNHCR reported that the influx of refugees was still ongoing.
The displaced individuals are currently finding temporary shelter at Butogo primary school and the homes of relatives and well-wishers in Butogo and Busoru villages in Kisubba sub-county. DG ECHO partners have indicated that there are no immediate plans to relocate them to a formal settlement.
Emergency coordination efforts, spearheaded by the Bundibugyo district local government in collaboration with humanitarian partners, local leadership, and security forces, are underway to address the unfolding crisis. This new wave of refugees adds to the existing challenge, as 81,874 individuals have already arrived since January 2023, with 26% of them fleeing violence in the DRC. The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to provide assistance and support to those affected by the escalating conflict.
