The Philippines – Earthquake

On 17 November 2023, 08:16 h UTC, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred in northwerstern Sarangani Island, province of Davao Occidental in Mindanao with a 72km depth of focus and tectonic origin. R reported intensities of VII in Glan in Sarangani, General Santos City in South Cotobato and VI in Kiamba in Sarangani, Polompok in South Cotobato.

According to the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), there is no destructive tsunami threat.

Three people were killed in General Santos City, according to the Philippine Police and 296 injured. A total of 12 houses were partially and fully damaged in Sarangani and 7 infrastructure such as malls, buildings and schools were reported partially damaged according to the Department of Public Works and Highway.

Concerned local government units begun the damage assessment of public infrastructure and DG ECHO partners have deployed on 18 November for rapid assessment.
