Situation

Nepali and Chinese authorities issued a fresh downstream warning after a new barrier lake formed upstream of the Nepal–China border following the catastrophic 26 August glacier and bedrock collapse. Reporting on 28 August said the lake was already overflowing, creating a risk that its natural debris dam could fail and send another sudden surge into the Lhende Khola–Bhotekoshi–Trishuli river system. Chinese reporting cited by the Kathmandu Post indicated that a further 3 million cubic metres of water could enter the lake over the following three days. Authorities urged people in potentially affected river corridors to move to safer ground while monitoring continued. The hazard is a developing secondary emergency: a dam failure and second destructive flood had not been confirmed at the time of publication. Scientists are still refining the sequence of the original disaster, but satellite analysis indicates that part of a glacier and its underlying bedrock collapsed, temporarily obstructing river flow before water and debris surged downstream.
