How the score is calculated

The score starts at 8. It adds points from recorded affected, deaths, displaced and casualty counts, plus terms found in the story title, event type or status. For each count, only its highest matching band is used.

Updated verified snapshot

Situation

Slow-moving thunderstorms brought intense rain, flash flooding and transport disruption to parts of Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands from 16 to 18 September 2026. Roads, vehicles, buildings, flights and local transport services were affected. In Olivella, Barcelona province, emergency services recovered the body of a driver early on 17 September after his vehicle was swept into the Riera de Begues during the preceding night's flooding. This fatality belongs to the 16–17 September flood emergency; it is not reported as a death on 19 September. Monitoring and operational updates continued through 19 September as authorities assessed impacts and further storm risk.

Separately, GDACS event FL 1104199 episode 8 reported a Spain-wide, multi-location aggregate of one death and 1,249 people displaced for 28 September to 5 October 2026. Episode 9 later revised the displacement figure to 1,299 while retaining one death and the same event period. Later GDACS event-summary observations raised the displacement aggregate first to 1,339 and then to 1,341, with one death retained; the event period now runs through 8 October. The source does not identify that death as the Olivella fatality, so the national aggregate is retained as a separate dated series and is not added to or reconciled with the earlier regional record. Spain's Civil Protection alert of 2 October warned of very strong and persistent showers and storms in the eastern third of the peninsula; it is retained as hazard and geographic corroboration only because it did not provide human-impact totals.
