How the score is calculated
The score starts at 8. It adds points from recorded affected, deaths, displaced and casualty counts, plus terms found in the story title, event type or status. For each count, only its highest matching band is used.
- Affected people
- 1–999: +5 · 1,000–9,999: +12 · 10,000–99,999: +20 · 100,000–999,999: +28 · 1 million+: +35
- Deaths
- 1–9: +8 · 10–99: +14 · 100–999: +22 · 1,000+: +30
- Displaced people
- 1–9,999: +6 · 10,000–99,999: +12 · 100,000+: +18
- Casualties
- 100 or more: +8
- Story wording
- +10 for terms such as catastrophe, famine, war, conflict, major earthquake, mass casualty or critical. Otherwise, +5 for active, ongoing, emergency, outbreak, cyclone or hurricane.
Score bands: Watch 0–24 · Moderate 25–49 · High 50–74 · Critical 75–100. Scores are capped at 100. Missing or unparseable figures add no points.

Situation
An early-season nor’easter tracked along the U.S. East Coast, bringing prolonged northeast winds, heavy rain, rough surf and coastal flooding across New York City, Long Island, the lower Hudson Valley and New Jersey. New York City Emergency Management’s 24 September travel advisory forecast 2–3 inches of rain citywide, locally 4–5 inches, and wind gusts of 40–50 mph; these were forecast values, not final totals. The advisory said widespread flash flooding was not expected at that time, while isolated flash flooding could not be ruled out.
By Saturday evening, local reporting described flooding, downed trees and wires, and strong gusts in the region. ABC7 reported one NYCHA employee was killed after a tree fell on him in East New York, Brooklyn, and four people sustained minor injuries in a separate tree fall in Homecrest. The fatal tree strike occurred during the storm, but the cited report says it had not been established whether the storm’s winds caused the tree to fall. The death and injuries are retained as storm-period observations with that causality limitation.
The National Weather Service’s coastal flood warning for parts of the New York City area remained in effect through 6:00 p.m. EDT on 27 September. Reported power-outage figures are dated snapshots rather than current totals: an ABC7 live update counted about 35,000 outages across the Tri-State region at 7:00 a.m. on 26 September. No consolidated affected-person or displacement total was found in the sources reviewed. The mapped point marks broad New York City context; impacts extend across the wider tri-state region.
