Situation
Flash flooding near Newcomb, New Mexico, killed two adults and one juvenile during the early hours of 16 September 2026. Navajo Police responded at approximately 00:30, joined by Navajo Nation Fire and Rescue crews from Newcomb and Shiprock, Navajo EMS and 4Corners K-9 Search and Rescue.
The Navajo Nation Commission on Emergency Management separately declared an emergency on 18 September after severe monsoon storms and flash flooding damaged roads and other infrastructure, displaced residents and created continuing health and safety risks across the Navajo Nation. The declaration did not publish a numeric displacement total, so none is inferred here. The three confirmed deaths relate to the Newcomb incident and are not presented as a Navajo Nation-wide casualty total.
