Situation

Two people died in separate rain-triggered landslips in Kottayam district, Kerala, on 20 September 2026. Near Velathussery on the Erattupetta–Vagamon road at Teekoy, a roadside landslip killed Sangeetha Arul Lal, 35; the woman travelling with her was rescued with injuries and was reported stable.

In a separate incident at Peringulam in Poonjar Thekkekara, mud struck a house and killed Joseph Chelakkad, 80. Two other people in the house escaped or were rescued. Initial police-linked reporting listed the Poonjar resident as missing before later district reporting confirmed his death; that timing change is preserved in the evidence history. Houses were also reported damaged at Mangalagiri near Teekoy and at Peringulam, but no verified district-wide damage or displacement denominator was published, so none is inferred here.
