
An earthquake of 5.2 M at a depth of 10 km occurred on 15 January 23.07 UTC (15 January at 17.07 local time) in south-western El Salvador, close to the border with south-eastern Guatemala. The epicentre was located in Ahuachapán Department, about 9 km north of Ahuachapán Municipality (El Salvador), and about 9 km south of Aldea El Coco Settlement (Jutiapa Department, Guatemala).
Two aftershocks of 5.0 M and 4.5 M respectively were reported in Jutiapa Department (Guatemala), close to the main earthquake event.
According to national authorities in El Salvador, a number of families have been displaced to public shelters. Media report that some houses have been affected by the earthquake activity and related landslides, particularly the communities of San Lorenzo and Ahuachapan, where a red alert for seismic activity is in force.
In Guatemala, light damage was reported to houses in the Municipalities of Aldea Estanzuela, Comapa, Jutiapa, as reported by National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED).
