The ongoing activity of Popocatépetl volcano in central Mexico has led to an increase in the yellow alert level from Phase 2 to Phase 3. Mexico's National Center for Prevention of Disasters (CENAPRED) recorded two moderate volcanic explosions on 22 May, resulting in ash fall across multiple municipalities in Puebla, Mexico, and Tlaxcala states.

To ensure the safety of the affected population, the Puebla Civil Protection authorities have established 35 shelters capable of accommodating 22,000 people since 17 May. Additionally, classes have been suspended in 40 municipalities of Puebla State to protect students and staff from potential health risks associated with volcanic ash exposure.

Due to the presence of volcanic ash on the airstrips, the Puebla International Airport temporarily suspended flights on 22 May at 22:51 UTC. This decision was made to prioritize the safety of passengers and aircraft operations.

The ongoing volcanic activity underscores the importance of remaining vigilant and following the guidance provided by civil protection agencies. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and implement necessary measures to ensure the well-being and safety of the affected communities.
