Heavy rainfall and strong winds have been affecting most of the country since the beginning of the rainy season (May 2023) causing floods, landslides and a number of severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
The National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) and WHO PAHO report, as of 11 October, 47 fatalities, where the worst affected Departments are Guatemala with 14 fatalities, Alta Verapaz with six and Chichuimula and Suchitepequez each with four fatalities). In addition ten persons are still missing, five have been injured, over 17,500 have been evacuated and a total of more than 3.3 million affected. More than 7,700 buildings have been damaged as well as 32 schools and 12 bridges.
Over the next 72 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is forecast over most of the country, except over north-eastern Departments.
